Help keep an eye on your mates this Australia Day Long Weekend

Hotels across Newcastle are preparing for one of the busiest and hottest long weekends of the year, with Australia Day on Saturday, hotel trading hours extended on Sunday night and a public holiday Monday.

While Newcastle and Hunter hotels have a wide range of activities and entertainment on offer over the long weekend from Russell Coight contests, family days and free BBQs to live music events with some of Australia's biggest name acts like Thirsty Merc and GANGgajang, partygoers are being asked to show true mateship this Australia Day weekend by looking out for their friends when out at venues to ensure everyone has a good time.

AHA NSW Director of Liquor and Policing John Green said hoteliers will be working closely with police throughout the long weekend and extra staff and security will be rostered on at licensed premises.

“Australia Day is a day to celebrate what it is to be Australian, but don’t be that person who spoils it for everyone,” said Mr Green.

“Hotels are a traditional place to celebrate our national day and many pubs are offering live entertainment, a great atmosphere and a full range of quality food and beverages – so you can’t go wrong. But the message is simple – help look after your mates as anti-social behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated in our venues.

“You know your friends better than anyone, so if you think your mate has had enough to drink let them know before hotel staff intervene. If they need to leave, help them get home - that’s part of what being Australian is about.”

Mr Green said hoteliers are prepared for a busy - and hot - long weekend.

“The weather is expected to be warm again on Saturday, so make sure you stay hydrated throughout the day and pace yourself,” said Mr Green.

“Remember, there is no better or safer place to celebrate our national big day out than your local.”

Special event trading hours will be in place on Sunday 27 January, 2019 with closing extended from 10.00pm till midnight at hotels and clubs.
